As most people know, dogs are not only loving pets and companions. Many dogs also serve important functions in the community as well. Dogs help the police and military search for bombs, drugs and people. Dogs help blind people make their way through the world. Dogs work on farms and pastures and serve their masters as tough and militant guards and even soldiers. This article will discuss which breeds thrive in different tasks and why.
The organization Guide Dogs of America relies on three pure breeds to use as guide dogs for the blind. The majority of the guide dogs are Labrador Retrievers, followed by Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds. These breeds are chosen based on three behavioral characteristics: willingness, health and temperament. These dogs possess the intelligence and patience to assist their owners in the best way possible. They are robust, fit and well-suited to the task. They are also loyal and love people, which helps them stay focused in crowded situations. All three of these breeds also exhibit a variety of sizes, making them easier to pair with different owners.
The top three guard dog breeds are the Bullmastiff, Doberman and the Rottweiler. Bullmastiffs, which are 40% Bulldog and 60% Mastiff are loyal, courageous and very strong. These dogs have an inherent protective instinct and will bite or wrestle intruders to the ground. Dobermans are exceptionally intelligent dogs that vary in temperament, but generally they will not hesitate to attack if they feel their family is in danger. Rottweilers are also intelligent dogs, considered ninth most intelligent breed in the world. Rottweilers are calm and loving with their families, but also fiercely protective. They are very strong, have great stamina and are resistant to pain.
Depending on the task, many different breeds are used for police work. However, the most common police dog is the German Shepherd. The key attributes for an effective police dog are intelligence, strength, aggression and sense of smell. Most police German Shepherds are males, left unneutered to maintain their natural aggression and strength. German shepherds also possess a highly acute sense of smell and are very intelligent and trainable, making them excellent bomb and drug sniffing dogs as well as search and rescue dogs.
There are over a dozen common and well-qualified herding breeds, but the most well-known and best regarded of those breeds is the Border Collie. Border Collies are widely considered to be the smartest dogs in the world and because of this, dog obedience training of the breed is easy. With their high intelligence, the Border Collies demand difficult tasks. They are also highly agile and fast dogs, and their natural herding instinct makes them perfect farm dogs. Border Collies are also renowned for their performance in athletic competitions, and their powerful sense of smell makes them excellent search and rescue dogs.
As you can see, dogs are not just the loving, happy pets we often consider them to be. The breeds mentioned above are only a few of many types of dogs humans have bred throughout history to serve them. Though any of the breeds will make excellent pets, remember the purpose they were created to serve. Knowing what your dogs’ inherent instincts and abilities are will make you a better, more informed dog owner.

Picking a nanny can take quite some time to do properly. When you want to make sure your kids are being cared for properly, there is not such a thing as too comprehensive of a background check.
When selecting a nanny, it’s vitally important that you perform an interview with the candidate to see of you’re comfortable with their up-front answers. If the interview goes well, then it’s time to get a detailed nanny background check to assure yourself that the candidate was telling you the whole truth and ignoring other areas that may have made them a risk to your child.
Make sure you include the following questions that you may ask your prospective nanny:
* What makes you think you want to be a nanny?
* What part of taking care of children makes you want this job?
* How come you left your previous employment?
* What make you discipline a child and what sort of punishment do you hand out?
* What can you offer my kids for their mental development that sets you apart from other candidates for this job?
* My child’s physical development is important to me. Is there anything you would do differently than other candidates for this position?
* How do you encourage learning?
* What is your background with respect to having my kids learn music and art from you?
* Have you watched kids play outdoors as well as indoors?
* What do you like to do outside of work?
* How do you handle a kids that’s throwing a fit for no justifiable reason?
Tell your prospective nanny that you always run a comprehensive background check on leading candidates as a final quality certification. If they act surprised, confused or ornery then you probably want to avoid hiring this individual.
It’s wise to have your nanny candidates fill out a basic job application form that includes references, current contact info, their work history and the last places they’ve lived.
Make sure you check each reference and if the reference cannot be contacted, ask for a replacement reference. Ask the applicant about any part of the application that you don’t find contains enough information. This application should also include his or her state issued driver’s license number, social security number and the date and location of birth.
Make sure that you have your applicant sign a consent form for the background check and get a copy of his or her state issued identification (passport, drivers’ license). Make sure the official identification includes a photo.
The nanny background check should include the following:
Identity Verification: Verify that the SSN and driver’s license numbers that were supplied by the nanny are actually theirs.
DMV Records: Though it doesn’t seem like such a big deal, discovering that your prospect is a habitual drunk driver or reckless driver may make you think twice about hiring them when you’re concerned about your kids safety.
Financial Records: A basic credit check will let you know how responsible your nanny will be with the paycheck he or she will earn. You can learn if he or she pays the bills on time and this check will also reveal years worth of previous addresses and employers.
Criminal Records: A criminal records check is usually limited to a state wide check, but you can also contact the states listed on the financial check to see if your applicant has a record in those states. A nationwide check is not usually an option. As part of this criminal records check you will absolutely want to run a Sex Offender check. Obviously anybody who is listed as a sex offender is a dangerous choice for a nanny.
You can’t be too careful when doing a nanny background check. After all there is no such thing as being too careful when it comes to the safety of your children. There is just no such thing as being too thorough. A good nanny knows this and won’t mind submitting to a nanny background check.

Choosing a nanny should not be a fast process. After all, there is no such thing as too much detail when it comes to making sure that your kids are in safe capable hands when you cannot look after them yourself. Making sure your nanny is perfect is vitally important.
One of the things every responsible parent should do is a nanny background check on each and every applicant they are seriously considering hiring to take care of his or her kids. Of course, before paying the money to do an extensive nanny background check; you should do an extensive interview yourself.
While you should feel free to ask your potential nanny any question that you think is important, there are some basic areas you will want to cover. When interviewing your nanny, make sure you ask the following key questions:
* Why do you want to be a nanny?
* What part of taking care of children makes you want this job?
* Why did you leave your previous job?
* What is your discipline policy?
* What can you offer my kids for their mental development that sets you apart from other candidates for this job?
* I want to make sure my kids have quality physical development. How would you be different than other prospective nanny’s to make sure this happens?
* What do you do to promote learning?
* What is your background with respect to having my kids learn music and art from you?
* Have you take care of kids in both indoor and outdoor settings? How did that go?
* When you have free time, what kinds of things do you like to do?
* What would you do if a child threw a tantrum or was just irrational?
After the interview, let your prospect know that as a matter of due diligence you will be running their name through a verifiable background check. If doing a check becomes a major issue to them, it’s time to pass them over and look for a candidate that you can feel safe and secure about.
The best way to get some of the basic information you will need is to have each nanny applicant fill out an application. On this application ask for references and current contact information for each reference. You should also ask for a quick rundown of his or her employment history and residence history.
Verify that the entire job application is completed. Verify that all information is present and includes their driver’s license and social security numbers along with their date and place of birth. Now follow up on the references they provide and make sure they are accurate. If a reference can’t be reached, have them provide an alternate one.
Have your prospective nanny sign a consent form and provide a copy of their photo id.
Make sure your background check for the nanny includes:
Identity Verification: Verify that the SSN and driver’s license numbers that were supplied by the nanny are actually theirs.
DMV Records: Checking the applicant’s driving record might seem mundane. After all, just because he or she got a lot of speeding tickets does not mean that he or she would be a bad nanny. What you want to look for are records of drunk or reckless driving. DMV records can also include accident reports if there are any - including accidents in which the applicant was a victim.
Financial Records: This is a good way to verify the accuracy of the information your candidate gave you. It will show their previous employers and previous addresses in addition to how well they manage their money. If they’re habitually late in payments, perhaps they are living beyond their means and may even be tempted to steal from you to make their payments!
Criminal Records: A criminal record check is imperative to the safety of your kids. You might be surprised to find criminal activity that you can’t live with - including that of being a convicted sex offender.
You can’t be too careful when doing a nanny background check. After all there is no such thing as being too careful when it comes to the safety of your children. There is just no such thing as being too thorough. A good nanny knows this and won’t mind submitting to a nanny background check.

Birding is one of the fastest growing recreational activities. As with any such thing, it has developed a language all its own. Here is a primer on some key phrases.
The act of oiling refers pretty much to what it sounds like. It is the application of oil to the wings and feathers during preening or through water contact.
Air sacs are a section of a bird’s respiratory system. They are attached to lungs and extend throughout the body cavity. Depending on the species, can temporarily store large amounts of air to cool the body and maximize oxygen intake.
Anting is a bizarre bird ritual. Many species will allow ants to crawl through their wings. The ants effectively preen the wings as they eat and store anything they find.
Paddling is a term that carries a different meaning than you might think. It does not refer to peddling through the water. Instead, it refers to stamping the ground to motivate food such as worms to pop up where they can be eaten.
The brood is somewhat of a catch all term meaning either the young birds hatched from a clutch of eggs or the act of incubating eggs in the nest. It can also refer as a verb to the act of keeping chick warm.
The act of mobbing is very interesting amongst birds. It refers to the little guys standing up to a big predator. Many smaller birds will unite to attack and drive away a larger predator. This act is particularly prevalent during nesting periods.
The rump of bird is an area often critical for identification purposes. It is the area just above the tail feathers. It is often distinctly colored and/or shaped, which helps with classification.
Dabbling is the act of a bird sitting on the water and feeding by moving its head below the water line to access plants, bugs, animals and whatever it happens to eat.
Not all nesting is the same. Cavity nesting refers to birds that make their nests in the cavities of trees and other structures. The placement of the nest high or near the grown can be a field marker of sorts.
As you know, the legs of birds are odd. The tarsas is the element of the leg that is just below the leg and above the ankle. It is considered part of the ankle anatomy.
As with humans, bird drumming refers to a noise made by birds. It is typically done by males to attract females. The drums are often trees or other structure that produce a particular noise when knocked.
The nape of a bird is another potential classification mechanism. It refers to the area between the crown of the head and neck. It often is an area of demarcation, making it helpful in identifying the bird you are seeing.
The act of gleaning refers to birds that pick their food off of upright structures such as trees. Some do it while hovering, but many may just land on the structure and whip their head back and forth to find food.
Being able to speak Birdinese is important, but hardly the key to enjoying your time on sighting trips. If you feel overwhelmed by the terms, forget them and just enjoy yourself.

Porch swings can be beautiful and they make an excellent addition to any garden. Just be sure to put them up carefully and treat them as soon as possible to protect them against the weather.
Porch swings do have a certain romantic feel to them. They provide a peaceful and intimate setting and they are perfect for those lazy summer nights. There is nothing better than sitting on a porch swing after a long hard day and just forgetting about your worries listening to the sounds of nature and sipping a nice, soothing drink. Having a porch swing can definitely be a great experience and it is something which you should not miss out on if you have the chance.
Could You Benefit From a Porch Swing?
Usually when you think of porch swings you automatically think of a large house in the country. However you do not necessarily need a big house in the country to benefit from a porch swing, all you really need is a big enough porch.
There are so many different types of porch swings available to choose from that you should easily find something to fit your porch space and needs. You can find more about swings gliders “http://www.home-decorating-reviews.com/magazine/swings-gliders-guide.html”>publications about swings gliders at his website. Usually people choose either a wood or wicker style swing and the most popular wooden ones include teak, pine and maple.
You may be worried about setting up the swing on your porch but luckily many sets come pre assembled so you do not have to do a large amount of work. However if you would prefer to do some DIY then you can also purchase sets which require you to build the whole thing yourself following simple instructions. You can also purchase seat cushions in a variety of different styles and made form different materials in many department stores.
Usually a porch swing is kept under a covered area and it is hung from the roof joists. If you want to have a porch swing however you do not always need a covered area to have one, you can easily attach the swing to a tree or anywhere in the garden if you prefer. Or if you really cannot have anything hanging then you could choose a glider instead as that helps to give you the swing experience in a small space.
Generally porch swings can be great items of furniture to have in a garden but they do need some care in order to keep them looking as good as possible. This includes wood staining which will keep the swing protected form all kinds of weather. If it is not treated then it could turn a funny color over time as the weather gets to it.
Overall always ensure that if you are using a hanging porch swing that you hang it in a sturdy place to avoid potential accidents. Then if you stain it and keep it weather protected you will have a beautiful addition to your garden and it will last for years.

Patio furniture cushions can add a lot of extra comfort to any furniture and they come in a variety of different colors and styles too.
Patio furniture is designed to help you to relax and enjoy your garden as much as you possibly can. The garden is a place where you can forget about all of your worries and you can simply just enjoy the crisp spring mornings and the warm, summer days and evenings. In order to relax fully however sometimes accessories are needed and that is where patio furniture cushions come in.
How Could Patio Furniture Cushions Help You to Relax?
Patio furniture cushions can be purchased in a number of different styles and colors to suit all tastes and budgets. They provide added comfort and they allow you to relax as much as possible whilst lasting years when looked after properly.
It is simply not possible to relax when something is uncomfortable and in some cases patio furniture is highly uncomfortable without added cushions. You can find more about decorate patio”http://www.home-decorating-reviews.com/magazine/patio-furniture-guide.html”>resources on decorate patio at his website. Most patio furniture cushions come already weatherproof but it might be a good idea to take them inside during bad weather just in case. After all it is better to take precautions rather than to have to replace something that could have potentially been saved.
One thing to keep in mind however is that many cushions can be kept outside in the rain and so if you are planning on keeping your cushion covers outside at all times, you will need to keep a few pointers in mind. The main one is that you need to be sure that you purchase a cushion which has the right density per size. This is to make sure that the water can easily pass through without any problems and the cushion will dry a lot better that way too.
Most cushion covers are also designed to withstand the heat on long summer days and they should not fade. They are designed to keep you cool so that if you are out sunbathing against them you will not get burnt.
Cushions are particularly best suited to wrought iron and aluminum furniture. However wooden furniture and wicker furniture can also benefit from added comfort too. It makes the furniture look a little more inviting and it tones down the formalness of wrought iron furniture in particular.
Overall when choosing patio furniture cushions you need to make sure that you choose ones which help you to feel relaxed. They should be plump, bright and they should also be weather resistant to withstand both the heat and the cold. You are aiming to create an intimate yet entertaining area and with cushions you can really help to provide a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

How does your garden grow? With fresh air, sunshine and rich, black soil? Not if you’re one of the countless gardeners who are now enjoying the benefits of hydroponics gardening.
Also called the cultivation of plants in water, the popularity of hydroponics gardening is booming, partly due to the shrinking water supplies and scarcity of fertile farmland.
The hydroponics method of gardening is not a new idea. One of the Ancient Wonders of the World, the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon, were made possible by using a form of hydroponics to cultivate the plants. Since those ancient times, researchers have proven that rather than simple black earth, many different aggregates or media could be used to support plant growth. Hydroponics gardening is just one of these alternative methods.
Benefits of Hydroponics Gardening
Many people enjoy the space-saving benefits of hydroponics gardening. Apartment dwellers and homeowners alike can grow fresh vegetables and plants in the smallest of spaces, even on compact patios and balconies. Many commercial greenhouses have also adapted hydroponics gardening because of similar space-saving benefits.
It’s been found that, when properly grown, hydroponics plants can actually be healthier and more vigorous. There is no soil used in hydroponics gardening, so the nutrients are more readily available to the plant. Plants are able to mature faster and yield an earlier harvest of flower and vegetable crops.
The convenience of hydroponics gardening has been enhanced by using a timer to automate the entire system. With such a system in place, the home gardener invests less time in maintaining the overall plant growth requirements. Automation enables the hydroponics grower to enjoy more flexibility, such as being away for longer periods of time without having to worry about watering the plants.
Growing Healthy Plants
All plants, whether grown with hydroponics or in a traditional soil garden, require the same basic elements: nutrients, water, light and air. When grown in a traditional garden, your plants will obtain their nutrients and water from the soil. The nutrient uptake is a little slower, because the soil can impede the roots’ abilities to access what they need.
The simple lack of soil is one of the joys of hydroponics gardening, making it a cleaner and easier way to grow. Plants are never stressed, because water and nutrients are always available. A hydroponics system set up outdoors will receive natural sunlight and air. Indoor systems, on the other hand, require artificial lighting and air circulation for plants to enjoy optimum health.
To provide artificial sunlight, many hydroponics gardeners use metal halide lamps and sodium vapor lamps in conjunction with incandescent light bulbs. Specially-designed grow lights or fluorescent bulbs may also be used.
Like all living things, plants need oxygen to stay alive. Healthy, white roots are responsible for delivering all of the nutrients for the plant. If the roots die, it is impossible for the plants to survive. Even if all of the other growth requirements are in place, they will be useless if the plants are not able to access nutrients through the roots. Therefore, your hydroponics system will require proper aeration through a means of supplying air circulation. This technique mixes the air throughout the nutrient solution, allowing the plant to draw out the carbon dioxide necessary to carry on photosynthesis.
The final piece to your successful hydroponics puzzle is a sterile medium. A wide selection of media choices is available, from simple gravel to special formulations. There is no soil, so there are no weeds to pull. That is, perhaps, the true joy of a hydroponics garden. There are no soil-borne pests to worry about, so diseases caused by pests are minimized, if not eliminated altogether.
Just because you’re short on time and space, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy fresh produce. Even if you just don’t like to get your hands dirty, you’ll dig the joys of hydroponics gardening.
