Wind Power’s Future Role

Posted in Home Improvement
by David Sullivan

As energy costs rise and fossil fuel supplies dry out, more and more people are becoming concerned with the availability and future cost of energy. Energy sources are beginning to emerge that have never been as cost effective, but are completely renewable. Many of these energies are completely environment-friendly, as well.

If you are concerned with rising energy costs too, an excellent energy that you can implement yourself if wind energy. You can build your own turbines that will last for years and end up saving you a lot of money and worry.

You’ll want to make sure your location will be suitable before you build a wind turbine generator. You’ll want to look at your zoning laws, your neighborhood, and consider how much electrical power you want to generate. You’ll need either at least a half an acre of open land or you’ll need a tower higher than anything in your immediate surrounding area so the blades can catch the wind. The average wind speed in your area will determine how much energy you can generate.

If you have a good location with a good wind speed, these wind powered generators can make a big dent in your power bill. Some people have been able to build wind turbine machines that not only provide enough power for their home, but an entire farm and even create additional power.

And any additional energy made by your wind turbines that you don’t use will go back into the grid, and your power company will cut you a check. If you aren’t wired to the grid you may store the extra power in batteries for backup.

Most people end up with a smaller version of a wind turbine. You may have limited space for a wind generator, but you can still get some good savings if you get a decent wind speed in your location.

Many have built homemade wind turbines already and can save up to 50% of their energy bill with just one turbine. These types of turbines can also be made in only a few weeks, depending on how much effort you are willing to put in and how much spare time you have.

Turbines are very little maintenance and can last a long time. They are cheap and can be mounted almost anywhere on a simple pole. Help the environment and save lots of money for years on your power bill!

Create Your Own Landscaped Backyard

Posted in Home Improvement
by Keith Markensen

There is more to landscaping your backyard than just putting plants here and there. It should be thought of as a kind of art through which we can express our personality and creative abilities. Consider the three elements in landscaping design: structure, area and the texture of the plants.

What is structure? Basically, this is the form that the plant takes and how its branches are arranged. There are different shapes to trees. Some have a hanging effect, such as the white bark willow, whilst others have a very stiff, upright appearance such as poplar trees.

Area is the second element of landscaping design. This is not the size of the yard; rather, it is the visual “flow” and arrangement of the plants. In an effective landscape design, the different groups of plants lead the eye around the garden.

Another important aspect of landscaping design is texture. Technically speaking, texture is how the plant appears in relation to the other plants that are around it. One example is that of the marigold, that looks either “rough” or “smooth” depending upon the plants that it is grouped with.

Once you have an understanding of how these elements work, you can put them to good use. The following are some more ideas as to how you can landscape your backyard.

Planning

When you are planning your landscape, you should make a list of all the items and tools you will need. Have a list of “substitute” plants for the eventuality that your first choice is unobtainable.

Work out a schedule for the building, prioritizing as you do so. This will assist you to estimate the time you will need to set aside to complete the landscaping. Most average projects can be completed in a week or fortnight.

Selecting the Plants

Using the design elements discussed earlier, choose the plants. Many varieties of plants will work well en masse. Aim to create a 3D effect that looks effective from no matter where you view it.

Use your creativity. Think about a theme to use in the garden design. Some examples of commonly used themes are country, romantic, tropical or formal.

Make it work - the Construction Process

Make sure that the soil is adequately prepared. You may decide to have elevated beds, either by heaping the soil or using landscape stones as borders. Elevated beds eliminate the problem of excess water loss during irrigation.

There is an optimum time to plant trees and other foliage. This is during the months of October and November. Planting at this time of the year allows the plants to establish their root system during the dormant winter months in time for the new growth in spring.

clawfoot bathtub info

Posted in Home Improvement
by Sam Cloud

The first type of tub I looked into is the Clawfoot bathtub. Clawfoot is a freestanding tub and are the original tub made of cast iron. Typically there are 3 styles. Slipper tub where one side of the Clawfoot tub is slopped for making it more comfortable, classic roll rim where the rim of the tub is rolled down, and double slopped style.

Jacuzzi whirlpool bathtubs bacame a household name in 1968. The use of this new innovation became soo popular that the jacuzzi name became the way people referred to these whirlpool tubs. This spa whirlpool bathtub uses jets to build pressure and shoot water at specific parts of the body.

Free standing or pedestal bathtubs can be dated back to 1000 BC. A pedestal tub is a bathtub usually in the middle of a room with a built up pedestal where the bathtub can be affixed. It is a type of bathtub that you would see in a typical art deco design.

The corner tub allows a roomier feel for any master bedroom. It’s purpose is to maximize space

Elderly love the walk-in bathtubs. Often known as handicap bathtubs, these tubs provide handrails to assist the elderly or handicap. Typically they have a seat to make bathing more functional.

A lot of parents enjoy the baby bathtub. It allows the parent to bath the child and helps to keep the head out of the water. Parents like to be able to place this miniature tub in a sink or next to a sink or in a bigger tub.

Wood Flooring Just Needs Love

Posted in Home Improvement
by Noel Wortinger

When you are dealing with your own floor you need to be sure that you know exactly what it needs. For example if you have a carpet and you have no vacuum cleaner you are really asking for trouble because going around and picking up individual pieces of dirt, hair, food, and other things which can end up on the floor is a chore that nobody is looking forward to.

The same could be said for Wood flooring; if you have a hard Wood flooring and you are not able to clean or sweep or polish this floor often enough, then you are just asking for trouble when it comes to making it sparkle.

Wood Flooring Just Needs Love

If you consider it though you should be very comfortable with the fact that Wood flooring just needs love like anything else. If you have a wood floor that is in need of some attention and then really the first thing you should do is get yourself a broom and get yourself a nice cloth depending upon how nice the flooring should be.

If you have older Wood flooring and you are just trying to keep it clean then that’s one thing; if you have brand new oak flooring which should be able to be eaten off of then that’s a completely different story and it’s something that you should be well aware of.

Wood flooring does need particular attention when it comes to cleaning because unlike a vacuum cleaning job on a carpeted floor, dust and dirt and other particles can accumulate on the wood floor seemingly without notice. Great stretches of time can go by where you don’t pay any attention to your wood floor until you have noticed that there are huge cobwebs and dust balls of mold and other gross things that need to be taken care of straightaway.

Wooden Floor Is Good Enough For Most

However the benefits of having a wooden floor are exponential in number. People often put there wooden floor in their nicest room in their home because they feel it deserves a much more attention than they give the rest of their home. Often times these rooms will be unused for days or weeks on end and then they will pull out the nice china and pull out the big platter and have a whole bunch of friends and family come over to enjoy a fine meal and admire their find flooring. While this may seem like an exaggeration to some, the truth is actually a lot more closely held then many people may believe and this is something that everybody should remember what they are talking about a really nice wooden floor.

The design of your home has to be practical and functional

Posted in Home Improvement
by Claudio Carbeni

Everyone likes to save money and when it comes to the interior design of their home there is no exception. There is nothing wrong with tackling interior design projects if you can do the job properly and the job serves its purpose.

A great sense of accomplishment can be achieved from a job well done especially if it is a project both you and your partner have tackled together.

DIY home improvements has come into its own of late, affording amateurs to tackle home improvements with a great deal of success. These include major adjustments such as cabinet refacing to simply installing swing arm curtain rods. As you are most probably well aware, there are certain home improvements we have to leave for the professional. Some well intentioned DIY home improvements can result in a catastrophe so it would do you well to remember, it is your “home” you are trying to improve for the better.

There are many instructional DVDs and informative books available for DIY projects. So please, watch and read any DIY home project very diligently - even to the point of taking notes. If the project you are attempting involves plumbing or electrical work - please, call in a professional. Both of these types of improvements can cause damage and harm not only to your home but also to you personally. It may seem simple but its nothing like installing a new swing arm curtain rod.

Loadbearing

Before you decide to knock out a wall of your home to enlarge another room please ensure it is not a “loadbearing” wall. Should you try knocking out a loadbearing wall you are going to find yourself in a whole heap of grief. If in doubt, and you still wish to knock this particular wall out - get in a professional to verify the status of the wall and if it is just a partitioning wall, feel safe in the knowledge that a professional builder has deemed it to be so.

Back to that wall you want to remove - please ensure that there are no electrical or plumbing lines running through it because severing them can seriously injure you and will create a disaster where your home is concerned. Never assume anything!

You need to understand and accept your own limitations and you need to be responsible. That old clich - “If in doubt - don’t” will hold you in good stead and your home as well. Home improvements are not about “ego.” They are about improving the look and functionality of your home.

There are many improvements you will be able to accomplish yourself and there are many you won’t. You have to be honest with yourself and accept the fact that you cannot refurbish “everything” you would like to - that’s why there are professionals.

Bear in mind that, if your house is covered by householder’s/homeowner’s insurance companies will not cover any damage due to careless home interior design. So be very sure about tackling a particular DIY home renovation idea before actually tackling it, but leave the heavy duty stuff to the professionals.

How To Grow Herbs Outdoors or in Container Gardens

Posted in Home Improvement
by Thomas Fryd

Whether you are growing herbs outdoors or in a container garden, good soil is one of the most fundamental conditions for encouraging healthy plants. While the sun is important for the energy they need for growth and reproduction, these chemical reactions can only occur with components from the soil. For this reason, it is important to grow your herbs in soil which provides all the necessary nutrients.

Water content, nitrogen and phosphorus content, alkalinity, and acidity, are all factors controlled by the soil in which your herbs are planted. Keeping all of these at the right level is one of the most important things you can do to help your herbs thrive. You should do some research on your herbs to find out the necessary soil levels.

In container gardens, all of these levels are up to you to completely control. In outdoor settings, nature provides some help, but you should still monitor these levels to ensure optimum herb growth.

Different herbs have different requirements. For example, lavender grows best in dry, alkaline soil with good drainage. Sage can get root rot if you keep the soil too moist. Nurseries or garden centers can help you determine your herbs’ needs and find soil that will help your herbs achieve maximum growth.

Soil is usually categorized as sandy, clay-like, or somewhere in between. Soil with a clay component retains water, while sandy soil provides good drainage. Most herbs require something in the middle of these two extremes. The addition of good compost can help you achieve the right balance, but you should understand your herbs’ specific requirements to choose the right soil.

When growing herbs, you also need to watch for pests. These include flying bugs as well as bugs in the soil, which is yet another reason to monitor your soil conditions. However, herbs can also help keep some pests from attacking your other plants. For example, planting herbs can help deter aphids that may be attracted to the scent of roses and certain vegetables. Chives, mint, basil, and cilantro also help control pests. For example, basil can keep tomato hornworm from ruining your tomatoes.

However, you should be aware that some herbs attract pests. Dill and yarrow can attract wasps, but keep some species of beetles away. Tomato hornworms attack dill, but this can keep them away from your tomatoes.

If you are growing herbs but want to avoid pests, you may want to consider a neem oil as a natural pesticide or insecticide. However, keep in mind that if you plan to use your herbs for culinary uses, you should avoid pesticides if possible.

Growing herbs does not have to be difficult. However, if you want healthy plants, watch for pests and provide the right soil type for your herbs.

A Trench Coat Story | Skip Hire

Posted in Home Improvement
by Candy Fishern

I used to think that getting rid of my rubbish was a boring waste of time. Yet now, I have discovered a hassle free way of doing this.

My journey began when a drunken male’s journey ended. After crashing his car into my brand new garden wall, I was left with bricks all over my new landscaped driveway. I could’t believe my luck, a man wearing nothing but a trench coat crashes into my wall and doesn’t have any insurance to pay for it.

He then proceeded to exit his vehicle and ask me very kindly if he could use my bathroom facilities, I called the police and he decided he could outrun them. He was arrested but obviously the damage had been done and I was left with a mess in my front garden and a written off vehicle. A towing company was called, as he had no insurance, but broken bricks and car parts were still strewn across my garden.

Obviously, my garden is not a builder’s yard and I looked to skip hire as a stonewall solution to my problem. This provided me with an easy and fast way to put my garden right. A skip would allow me to get rid of the rubble and help me to forget the whole nightmare!

My trauma from the task, did not help the vast information I was faced with, I needed to liaise with the company in order to establish a convenient time, and as I was taking time off work, to ensure the company was reliable enough to turn up on time, and find money from somewhere in which to pay them. With the hopes that the trench coat man would cough up later. I was inundated with the various forms of skips available for hire, but 5 star Skip Hire, seemed to be the winner in helping me decide.

The service team on the phone got back to me, when they said they would and explained in layman’s terms for me, what the whole process would entail and exactly what was going to happen when. And then to my amazement everything went exactly as they said it would.

This I’m sure you will agree is rare for most companies, but their customer service was immaculate. This ship hire company arrived on time, were extremely helpful on the phone, and made the whole process enjoyable. 5 star skip hire was cost effective and made me feel like collecting my waste in future to such an amount that I would have to use them again!

Overall, I would say that skip hire is the best way to solve this kind of problem, no matter what the material is, there is always a solution. I have to say that I very much enjoyed my skip hire experience, which acted as my hero in my hour of need

I eventually did get reimbursed by the trench coat man, not only by financial means, but we are now very much in love, and looking to move in together this fall.

3 Basic Needs For A Awesome Garden Party Gazebo

Posted in Home Improvement
by Jeff Johnson

A garden party gazebo is like any other gazebo that you might want to put in your garden with a few features integrated in to it for the convenience of having party. While there are some garden party gazebos that are temporary and can be put up and taken down on a whim, there are also some that homeowners have put up to be permanent fixtures in their gardens. Some garden party gazebos are made to be easy to put up with metal rods and tarpaulin, pretty much like a tent. Coleman garden gazebo choices are varied and lightweight as well as easy to put up and dismantle.

Vital Additions : Electricity and Water

There should always be an easy access to an electrical outlet of some source for the garden party gazebo for which to plug in electric grills, stereos and other appliances that you might need during a party. Having this readily available and nearby is especially beneficial if the gazebo is located a long distance from the main house. Whatever is needed can just be brought out of the house and used during the garden party in the Gazebo. This is an extra nice convenience and lends well to the parties success, especially if the party is going to keep going after dark.Always be safety conscious when dealing with wires at all times. If you are not sure of wiring or if there are bare wires somewhere if you don’t know for sure always assume they are hot. Make sure that the wiring is done professionally unless you are just stringing electrical chords.

Another really important feature that you need to have handy is water. Make sure that there is a good supply of water nearby. If your garden party gazebo is just a unit that can be set up and taken down for a party make sure that the location you decide to place the gazebo has this amenity and always put the gazebo back in the same place so that you can make the water and power stations permanent fixtures. This will save you the headaches of always searching for water and power as it will always be right there.

The Proper Flooring

One more feature that needs consideration is the type of flooring that your garden gazebo will have. While it is ok with a temporary structure to have just a grass or dirt ground it really isn’t advisable if you are going to throw parties while it is raining as this can make things very messy. It is a good idea to have either a concrete slab for the gazebo or a raised wooden floor that has steps leading up to it. This will protect your flooring from the issue of water damage in the rain.

While all of this isn’t a necessity it all adds up to a good environment for your garden party. Success or failure sometimes is just a matter of convenience and ease of use for your guests.

Home Built Wind Generator - Roll Your Own And Reduce Your Bills

Posted in Home Improvement
by Adrian Fletcher

It may sound a bit ambitious to think that you can sack your power company but many people are thinking about this for many different reasons. The number one reason, of course, is money.

Electricity bills go up and the rate at which they inflate seems to be breaking all previous records. Whether there are genuine supply and demand reasons for this increase or other factors like greed or politics behind it all, the truth remains that people are warming to alternatives. One such alternative is a home built wind generator

Why a Home Built Wind Generator?

The simple answer is because it can be done. Here are some valid reasons why.

Once you have installed a wind generator there is little to no running costs and all the electricity it creates is free. It is important to point out that you need an adequate amount of wind to make such a project viable and you will need some spare plot of land where the generator or turbine can be erected. If you live in a remote area then erecting a wind generator is not a problem but if you live in a residential area you may want to notify your neighbors of your plans too.

Kits Compared To Home Grown

The increased awareness of alternative energy has spawned many products in the home built wind generator field. Some are good and some not so, but basically you have two options - buy a kit or you can buy plans and build the generator from scratch. The kit is easy to install and is aimed at people without much DIY knowledge or expertise. A DIY solution require a bit or experience but gives you more flexibility in design and implementation.

If you like a challenge or have some DIY skills then the kit is your best bet. Prices will vary depending on what your requirements are but it is a more cost effective solution than paying professionals to install a wind turbine.

If you feel up for a great challenge and have some DIY skills and a genuine interest in alternative energy, then get yourself a book or find details on a website. Many of these types of info products come as video if you prefer that method to learn. You can pick up cheap raw materials on sites like ebay if you really are on a tight budget.

It is all a matter of your mechanical and electrical abilities as well as craftiness in substituting materials. However, hopefully the end result is a home built wind generator that actually produces a little energy.

For most people, a home built wind generator will be used to supplement their existing grid power. It may provide enough power to run some of your kitchen appliances each month. This can knock a bit off your energy bills.

A home built wind generator will not only save you a few dollar on your bills, it will help the environment and diminish your carbon footprint. Every little bit helps..everyone has a part to play.

Beautify Your Garden Feature With Retaining Wall

Posted in Home Improvement
by Thomas Fryd

One way to add interest to your garden is by constructing a retaining wall. Behind this wall, you can plant a lawn or flower bed. Although building a retaining wall requires some planning and effort, they are actually not that difficult to build.

When planning your wall, make sure that it is strong enough to hold up the earth, but porous enough to allow for drainage. Many retaining walls are built from stone, held together with either dirt or cement between the stones.

In building your wall, be sure the base is sunk into the ground, ideally about 6 inches deep. Ideally, the width of the base should be at least a quarter of the wall’s height.

Every 24 inches or so, and about 6 inches from the lower ground level of the wall, you should install drainage pipes. If your wall is porous enough, you may not need these pipes. But, especially if you are using mortar to hold your wall together, drainage pipes are necessary.

If you are building a wall with soil between the stones, you may be able to start at the ground level, instead of sinking the wall into the soil, although it is better if you do start below the ground level. The easiest way to build your wall is to choose local stones, with larger ones for the main stones and smaller stones to fill in the holes. You should use smaller stones near the top of the wall. Try to make the side of the wall facing out as level as possible, ensuring an attractive appearance. Don’t use stones with round surfaces, as they will be hard to fit together into a structurally sound wall. No spaces should be left; they should be filled in with packed dirt or smaller stones.

When building the overall wall, make sure it slopes back slightly against the soil it is retaining. This will help give you wall strength. You can slope it as much as 5 or 6 inches back for every foot of height, although you do not need to slope it this much.

Once you have built your retaining wall, you can also use it as a wall garden. You can plant smaller plants in the soil between the stones. You can also plant flowers with strong roots, which will also help keep your wall strong as well as adding color. There are many different varieties of flowering plants which would be suitable for your wall.

If you are building a mortared or concrete wall, the construction will be somewhat simpler, as the mortar forms a tighter bond. You should mix 1 part Portland cement and 2 parts sand, coating the top of each stone to add the next layer. The areas between large stones can be filled with smaller stones. Mortared walls are much more permanent than those built with earth.

Concrete walls are even stronger than those built with mortar. However, you need to build forms for the concrete, which can be complicated. Concrete walls can be thinner than rock walls, especially if the concrete is reinforced when building landscape river walls.

No matter which method you choose, the top of your wall needs to be protected. You can use broad, flat stones on the top of your wall. Slate makes an excellent choice for this.
